The project also foresees the construction of the related seashore infrastructure, including water supply stations and four passenger embarkation decks. Designed by the award-winning global architecture firm Arquitectonica, the terminal is due to be completed by December 2023. The Port of Miami is located approximately 8 miles from Miami International Airport and 25 miles from Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Parking is $22.00 per day (rates subject to change by the Port Authority). All garages and Lot E accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or any major U.S.

From the Airport:

Either driving trough Downtown Miami – can be chaotic but not too bad on weekend early mornings – or trough the Port Tunnel. The latter is advisable unless you are staying in a hotel Downtown or in Miami Beach. The Tunnel entrance/exit is on MacArthur Causeway (I-395) that connects mainland Miami to South Beach, right in the middle of Watson Island (very close to the mainland). A good alternative to Cruise Lines Transfers, Taxi, Uber or Lift is the service provided by independent shuttle companies that can easily be booked online. There are quite a few and IQCruising does NOT in any way endorse, sponsor or gets paid to advertise any of them.

It contributes annually with around USD 43 billion to the economy and supports over 334,000 jobs countrywide. Arrangements should be made with your cruise line in advance if you require wheelchair assistance to board the ship. If wheelchairs are required for the duration of the sailing, passengers are responsible for providing their own or they could likely rent from their cruise ship. Free cell phone waiting lots are available across from terminals B and 2 (north of Seaman's Center) for anyone waiting to pick up disembarking passengers.

Hotels Near Miami Cruise Port

It kept that title for more than two decades and accommodated world's biggest cruise ships of all major passenger shipping companies. The port has 2 super post-Panamax gantry cranes (among the world's largest) with capacity to handle 22,000-TEU boxships. Another form of independent travel between airport and cruise terminal are taxis, which don’t require pre-booking. Chances are slim that you’ll be the only cruise ship in port the day that you sail out and when you get back.

Downtown Miami is home to the city’s major attractions and is the commercial hub of the city. From theaters and shops to government officers and corporate headquarters, the district is a bustling part of the city with plenty of hotels and things to do. The comfort and assurance of the official option does come at a cost however, with many shuttle services costing around $25 to $35 per person. Charges like this may be fine if you are travelling alone, but they soon add up to a large bill if you are travelling with family. Virgin Trains USA (formerly operating as Brightline) connect Miami with Ft.

Located in the vibrant city of Miami, PortMiami is one of the world's busiest cruise terminals. With its modern facilities and convenient access to the city's renowned beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural attractions, it offers an exciting departure point for cruises to the Caribbean and beyond. Explore the diverse neighborhoods, savor the flavors of Latin cuisine, and soak up the sun-drenched atmosphere before setting sail from this iconic departure point. Terminal D was opened in 2007 and upgraded in 2013 to accommodate the new generation of larger Carnival cruise ships. The apron of the terminals was improved to allow for new passenger boarding bridges to the ships. PortMiami has capacity to handle the world's biggest passenger ships and is homeport (turnaround port) for numerous large-sized vessels.

(NEW) MSC Cruise Terminal (AA, AAA)

Many have undergone extensive renovations, while others will be updated to offer a better travel experience for cruise passengers. Passenger drop-off is offered in front of each terminal, and parking is also available at the port. Uber/LyftIf you fly in for your cruise — or simply don’t want to deal with driving — then Uber and Lyft offer service throughout South Florida to the Miami cruise port (including the airports).

Hotels closest to the port usually offer higher-end accommodations due to being near trendy downtown and also usually have nicer atmosphere. You can also try staying in South Beach, with its famous art-deco hotels. It’s only about minutes from the port and offers lots to see and do before a cruise. As you would expect given the number of cruises that leave Miami, it has the capacity to dock a number of cruise ships as once. In fact, with a total of eight terminals (with several more on the way), more than a half-dozen ships can be berthed at any given time. Below we’ve listed current terminal and those under construction or soon to be built.

As per the terms of the project, the Company will construct two new docks measuring 2,461 ft. in total. In our opinion, Miami is one of the most beautiful homeports and is always a thrill to sail out of. Icon of the Seas will be homeported year-round from PortMiami.

Miami Cruise Terminal J was built with smaller luxury cruise line passengers in mind – Azamara, Regent Seven Seas & Oceania. If you are travelling in from the Interstate, look for the signs for the PortMiami tunnel. It’s a quick and free way to get directly to the port without having to get off the Interstate and drive in downtown Miami. PortMiami is situated on Biscayne Bay and supports 335,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Ford BlueCruise v1 2 Review: Hands-Off Highway Driving Gains Some Impressive New Skills

ford blue cruise map

GM's system can also be used in towing situations, and the automaker boasts more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads. Both Ford and GM are working on versions of their tech that can do unsupervised Level 3 highway driving, though for the moment that's still beyond either Super Cruise or BlueCruise. Ford's system feels like a sensible, fairly conservative driver from behind the wheel.

A little more breathing room in the lane

That's despite the Mustang Mach-E shifting very close to the edge of the lane at points, away from the neighboring truck. Just how long you can look away depends on a number of factors, but generally after a few seconds of inattention you'll get an audio warning and a message displayed on-screen. There's an escalating series of beeps and visual alerts, and finally BlueCruise will deactivate completely if it deems the driver isn't playing their part.

Automated Lane Changing makes life much easier

Just tap the turn signal stalk and if there's nothing in the way, the vehicle will move over on its own. Second, you can tow with Enhanced Super Cruise, meaning you can trailer your boat to the lake for a long weekend without having to steer, or at least, steer as much. Undoubtedly, Ford engineers are hard at work developing similar features that will be enabled in future updates.

Ford BlueCruise Makes Hands-Free Driving Easy

If it's raining or snowing heavily, the system will have issues. BlueCruise may also be averse to orange barrels, that is, the system could have trouble in construction zones. And finally, it will disengage if you drive out of a Blue Zone.

Ford BlueCruise v1.2 Review: Hands-Off Highway Driving Gains Some Impressive New Skills

Perhaps more notable, you don't have to buy the fanciest trim in order to add BlueCruise. For the most part, you can switch these settings on and off piecemeal. Lane Centering, Predictive Speed Assist, In-Lane Repositioning, and Lane Change Assist can all be enabled or disabled while the vehicle is in motion, through the Driver Assistance section of the settings pages.

In practice, I noticed it most when BlueCruise suddenly overruled the speed I'd set it to. That was particularly the case when it led to the Mustang Mach-E slowing aggressively while I had another vehicle close behind me. It's with those highway behemoths that you notice it in action most. Ford says that more extreme lane bias will prompt an on-screen message, explaining what's happening, but I never saw that appear in my test driving.

BlueCruise is watching you

This advanced driver aid operates on some 130,000 miles of approved roadway in North America and, for the most part, it works well. Despite all the hype around autonomous driving, the reality is that we're still a long way from cars that can operate themselves completely. Trust the tech too enthusiastically, and you're going to get burned. As before, BlueCruise relies on a camera to make sure you're paying attention to the road. It's mounted just above the steering column, and — while you can't see them — there are infrared lights in there to allow the system to keep working even at night. It'll play nicely if you're wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses, too.

Hitting the Road With BlueCruise, Ford's Hands-Free Highway Helper

But first things first, let's cover what BlueCruise is and what it is not. This technology is a hands-free driving aid that only works on approved, divided highways, so-called Blue Zones, which there are about 130,000 miles of in North America. The system can accelerate, steer and stop the vehicle as traffic and road conditions dictate.

Hitting the Road With BlueCruise, Ford's Hands-Free Highway Helper

This hands-free driving aid is currently included in the $3,200 Comfort and Technology Package, which also bundles a bunch of other amenities. Higher-performance GT models offer BlueCruise in the $1,900 Ford Co-Pilot 360 Active 2.0 and 360-Degree Camera options group. If you get a vehicle equipped with BlueCruise, you'll be set for three years.

The second is Lane Repositioning, intended to build confidence in the system when you're surrounded by other — often larger — vehicles. The system steers smoothly and has no trouble with surrounding traffic. The Ford system tends to make more small steering wheel corrections and can ping-pong slightly between lane markers when going through tighter corners. Despite these minor issues, the system is confidence-inspiring and makes long highway drives much more relaxing. This options group is priced at $1,995, though BlueCruise -- and just about everything else -- is standard on the range-topping F-150 Limited.

Again, don't try to send an email while driving or look up sports scores. BlueCruise will know what you're trying to do and the system will not like it. From behind the wheel of a 2023 Mustang Mach-E Select, though, I'd say it's worth the wait.

ford blue cruise map

While hands-free Level 2 systems remain controversial, not least because of the potential for drivers to overestimate just how capable (and autonomous) they really are, I'm still a fan overall. BlueCruise feels far more mature and stable than when it did when I first tested the technology. That's not to say it's perfect — and, given all of these systems are Level 2 despite being hands-off, there's no claim that you can stop paying attention — and highway lane shifts can still cause some fumbles. The change from two to three lanes, for example (or vice-versa), can cause BlueCruise issues at times, though the system is swift to resume once you're back to more predictable roads. That, for example, could already change lanes for you without the system deactivating; these days, it can automatically do so if you find yourself stuck behind slower traffic.

A second or two later, assuming there's nothing in the adjacent lane, and BlueCruise moves across. Another graphic showing the direction of the maneuver appears while that's happening. In testing, the biggest weakness of BlueCruise is how it handles off-ramps. When a new exit lane opens and you're driving ahead in the adjacent lane, the system will sometimes disengage and revert back to conventional adaptive cruise control. Fortunately, BlueCurise usually reengages a few seconds later once it figures out you're not headed for the ditch, but this is still a bit annoying and it happens more often than I'd like. There are situations, as I learned on a lengthy drive up Michigan's I-75, that will cause BlueCruise to temporarily disengage, that is, to revert to conventional adaptive cruise control where you have to steer.

Best time for Panama Canal Cruises 2024 Best Season

best time to cruise panama canal

The actual time spent transiting the canal itself is usually a day or two, depending on whether it’s a partial or full transit. On the other hand, a full transit Panama Canal itinerary is a crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean or vice versa. It encompasses the entire canal, offering a deeper exploration of the locks, channels, and the diverse landscapes encountered along the way.

The Ultimate Guide for a Perfect Panama Canal Cruise

Other great shore excursion options include taking the refurbished Panama Railway from the Pacific to the Atlantic. It rides parallel to the Canal and offers a great view in luxuriously paneled railway cars. Another exciting alternative is to take a trek through the rain forest at Gamboa, or visit an authentic Embera Indian Village on the Chagres River (which often takes place by canoe). Apart from length of sailing, the biggest decision you'll need to make on a Panama Canal cruise is whether to opt for a traditional trans-canal experience or take a partial crossing.

Sailing through the Panama Canal

The fall is one of the best times to see the rainforest and experience the river rapids for outdoor adventure seekers. Although you may experience more rainfall and higher humidity than in the dry season, you will likely enjoy fewer crowds, shorter wait times at attractions, and potentially more attractive fares. Just be prepared for some occasional rain and pack appropriate clothing to ensure a comfortable trip. Passengers often choose an Atlantic to Pacific or Pacific to Atlantic route, depending on where they live, although you'll gain hours if you choose the latter. If having the full "canal experience" is part of your bucket list -- or if you're an engineering geek and don't care too much about shore excursions within Panama itself -- this trip is for you. Most full Panama Canal cruises do call in the Western Caribbean, the Costa Rican ports of Limon (on the Atlantic side) and Puntarenas (on the Pacific), and Cartagena, Colombia.

Partial Panama Canal Crossing

You'll be enchanted by Spanish and Dutch cities dating back centuries, as well as diverse tropical rainforests, white-sand beaches, dramatic volcanoes and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And Princess provides live narration from the bridge while transiting the locks, just one reason we were voted "Best Cruise Line for Enrichment" by Cruise International. So stretch out on a Caribbean beach, admire the pristine rainforests, stroll the cobbled streets of colonial towns and journey through the fabled Panama Canal with Princess. There is something for every type of explorer in this culturally diverse region. Choose from immersive excursions such as exploring the engineering mastery of the Canal, trekking through surrounding rainforests, visiting local villages and relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Caribbean.

With the warmer temperatures, March is an ideal month to head to the beaches on one of the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of about 365 islands and cays off the Caribbean coast of Eastern Panama. Some cruise lines that visit the archipelago are Windstar, Star Clippers, Hapag-Lloyd and Ponant. October is a rainy month, but it's also one of the coolest months of the year, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s.

Carnival even offers partial Panama Canal cruises from less high-profile ports, such as Mobile, Alabama and Galveston, Texas. The most common full Panama Canal crossing itineraries are from Florida to California or vice versa—usually between places like Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles. Some cruises also start or end elsewhere on both of the American coasts, in the ports of New York City, New Orleans, San Francisco, San Diego or Vancouver, for example, among other places. When it comes to shore excursion planning, be sure to research the ports of call. Be cautious about wandering off on your own and consider booking cruise line excursions or reputable tours.

Visiting the Panama Canal for the first time is an extraordinary experience, made all the more special if you take some time to learn about this incredible feat of engineering. Hit the gift shop on the way out for a hat, T-shirt or another souvenir to mark the day you traveled in 10 hours from one ocean to another. Originally known as the Thatcher Ferry Bridge, the Bridge of the Americas connects North and South America and serves as the gateway to the Pacific Ocean. After traveling through the Miraflores Locks, which allow the ship to finish the descent to sea level, you have 8 miles to find a spot on deck, grab a flute of Champagne and get your phone or camera ready. You'll undoubtedly learn many fascinating factoids about the construction of the Panama Canal and the steps needed to cross it. This starts with the fact that the captain of the ship has to relinquish control to a Panama Canal official who is in charge of navigating the vessel through the canal the entire day.

For longer, repositioning Panama Canal cruises, you should stick to the earlier or later months of this window when the cruise ships are finding a new home. The weather in this region tends to be hot and humid, so pack plenty of shorts and t-shirts. Since Panama Canal crossings tend to be longer sailings, be prepared that your cruise might have more than one formal night.

Most of the partial crossing Panama Canal cruises will depart from Florida, and therefore, you will also enjoy some of the other fabulous Caribbean ports during your adventure. These include islands in the Southern and Western Caribbean, and occasionally Cartagena, Colombia. A cruise on the Panama Canal through Central America can appeal to more than one type of passenger. The Panama Canal portion of the trip focuses on the transit itself, with onboard lectures as ships make their way through the locks.

East Coast and end on the West Coast (or vice versa) will be at least 14 days long. With drier weather and high temperatures hovering around 88 degrees, it's less humid in the region in December. However, it's the holiday season, so cruise fares and other costs, like hotels for pre- and post-cruise stays, will be more expensive if you travel this month. December is one of the peak tourism months in Panama, with Panamanians traveling for the holidays and visitors from North America and Europe escaping the cold weather at home. For outdoor adventure seekers, it's too wet for hiking in the rainforests, but other activities benefit from the rainy season, including whitewater rafting. In Quepos, Costa Rica, Windstar Cruises offers rafting trips to the town of Santo Domingo, where you can take a float trip on the Savegre River.

Feel your ship rise 85 feet as water fills the locks on the Panama Canal. Listen as a historian shares tales of this incredible engineering feat that divided two continents. Explore the intriguing landscapes, culture and people of this amazing region. From engineering marvels to exotic wildlife, there's so much to discover while on your Panama Canal cruise. Most common are Miami-to-Miami voyages (or from other Florida ports), but you can also find Los Angeles-to-Los Angeles cruises that enter the Panama Canal.

The best outdoor area to explore is the nearby Veragua Rainforest Park. Here you will find hundreds of frogs, butterflies, and reptiles, in addition to monkeys, sloths, and birds up above. Just a few miles from Puerto Limón is the breathtaking Playa Bonita, the perfect tropical beach offering crystal-clear waters and soft sand.

That said, you’ll also meet many lovely local people and be able to see and experience the natural beauty, as well as wildlife, of the destinations. While there’s no right or wrong answer, there are pros and cons of doing either the full or partial transit of the Panama Canal. We recently came back from our first Panama Canal cruise, and there were definitely some things that I wish I would have known before I sailed. While I did a lot of research before my cruise, there were still some things I would have done differently. Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you can enjoy fine dining in Luminae, as well as suite accommodation and access to an exclusive lounge. On the Panama City side of the canal, you’ll sail under the graceful arch of the Bridge of the Americas, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Patagonia.

A partial transit, on the other hand, gives you a taste of the Panama Canal on a shorter cruise from Colon, on the Caribbean side, to the Gatun Locks and back again. Learn about its setting and context, too; there are opportunities to experience the lush rainforest and serene lakes through which the waterway passes, explore historic forts, and learn about Panama’s exceptional biodiversity. Calls on Golfito and Puntarenas in Costa Rica offer access to eco-adventure. A trip is still worth it for the excellent 3D IMAX film narrated by Morgan Freeman, which does a great job explaining the trials, tribulations and perils of building this awe-inspiring feat. You can also stand on the ground-level terrace or grab a seat in the bleachers on the first level to watch ships pass through the final set of locks; sometimes, a staff member is on hand to provide commentary. Since the crossing does take a while, especially sailing across Gatun Lake, you might find it fun to watch it from a different vantage point from time to time.
